The restoration of ANZAC has taken an immense toll on Billy, However, his four heart attacks have not stopped him. His drink of choice is Red Bull, and he consumes it as if it were oxygen. Nowadays, a brief stop at the doctor’s office is a minor delay on the way to the marina to continue working on the boat.
Many men would see health problems like these as a signal that they should slow down, work less, relax more, and take care of themselves. You’ve probably already guessed that Billy did not see it that way. It may be that Billy has swung too far to the other end of the dedication spectrum. Better not try to express that opinion to him. He won’t hear it.
Part of Billy’s resolve to keep going was his need to prove to himself, his friends, and family that he could see this through to its conclusion; prove that if he said he would do something, he would do it. Perhaps all he had been missing was a cause that touched his heart, and the support and belief of the people around him. He has earned that through his years of unending work, and the beautiful results he has achieved.
An equal part of his cause, strengthening his resolve, came to light several years into the project – his desire to provide a lasting gift to help his grandson, Giovanni.
Giovanni is in his late teens now. He was diagnosed with autism at age two. Billy’s desire to help Giovanni has compounded his resolve to complete the restoration of ANZAC and use it as a fundraising tool to help support autism research. Visit ANZAC and you will see the flag of Autism Speaks proudly flying from the mainstay.
Billy also realizes that a successful restoration of ANZAC will create a significantly valuable asset that he can pass to his family. Billy believes that ANZAC will be a contributing factor in his family’s ability to provide care for Giovanni after he is no longer eligible for much of the support he receives now.
Billy continues to dedicate himself to this quest. He has more than proven his commitment to everyone around him, including himself. Now he is racing against time and poor health to realize his dream. Despite his ongoing health problems and the physical challenge and cost of restoring ANZAC, he shows no signs of giving up, or even slowing down.
